Wallace: No time for sight-seers

Main Roads Minister Craig Wallace has urged drivers to stay off roads in North and Far North Queensland while the impact of Cyclone Yasi is still being felt.

Mr Wallace said authorities were particularly concerned with gawkers out-and-about Thursday morning, especially along the coast.

"This event is not over," Mr Wallace said.

"There will be further rain, strong winds and storm surges along the coast throughout the day.

"The storm surge this morning is likely to bring more flooding in low lying areas.

"Traffic lights may be out of action for some time and trees are across roads.

"Now is not the time to be out and about having a look around.

"Our priority is to keep these roads clear for police and emergency services.

"Just like the floods in other parts of the state, this is not a tourist attraction, it's a tragedy.

"We need to do everything we can to help people through. If you are not assisting the eff ort, please stay at home.

"I appreciate people may want to help but honestly the best thing you can do is stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

"As the Premier indicated this morning, lives have been saved because people listened to advice from authorities and acted sensible. I think people need to be congratulated for adhering to this.

"But the danger has not passed and I urge you to continue listening to the advice of emergency service authorities."

Mr Wallace said authorities were working hard to compile a complete list of roads that may be cut throughout the day.

"But please be aware the situation is changing by the minute.

"Conditions are constantly changing and while we'll be updating information on 131940.qld.gov.au with major impacts when possible, people simply shouldn't travel."

Mr Wallace said expert road assessment and repair crews from the Department of Transport and Main Roads were on stand-by to respond as soon as possible.

"We still don't know the full extent of the damage to the transport network," Mr Wallace said.

"And we may not know the full damage for some time."

Motorists are to be advised the Bruce Highway is cut in a number of places and should consider it closed until further notice.
